Golf Mag & Website News...
The latest updates on the magazines and websites where I get much of my info...
10/10: Golf Digest launches "Destination Finder" . I swear to God they stole this idea from Fat Guy Golf. GD has finally categorized their travel articles by state and combined it with their Places To Play to form a Destination Finder which looks suspiciously like this website. Although a long overdue idea, the execution still leaves something to be desired... a quick perusal reveals the Delaware and Iowa pages have no info at all, and the Pennsylvania page mysteriously features several articles on Charlotte NC (perhaps a generic search glitch from the same crappy search feature on their main site?). www.golfdigest.com/golf-courses/united-states
9/10: Golf Digest announces GD Insiders. " The chance to voice your opinion on everything golf, plus exclusive sweepstakes, rewards, events, and promotions." I signed up and can't say I recommend it. The sign-up process was a pure marketing survey that consisted of roughly 20 screens of info and took about 12 minutes. An email confirmation later, I finally got in and realized the content is wafer thin. www.golfdigestinsiders.com
10/09: Golf Digest just announced a new travel website in their Nov 09 issue: www.gdptravelcaddie.com . I spent 10 minutes on it and wasn't at all impressed... looks VERY thin on content so far, and overall it appears to be largely an advertising vehicle for links to various travel, golf destination, and golf packager websites. Might eventually be a decent spot to find a deal or two, but not a good source of golf travel info.
Golf Magazine recently came out with a new website www.golf.com/teetimes (some restrictions--like weekday tee times--may apply), and they come with a free one-year subscription to the magazine.
8/09: I JUST FOUND OUT THAT ONE OF MY MAJOR SOURCES, T&L GOLF MAGAZINE, FOLDED BACK IN APRIL '09 DUE TO LACK OF REVENUE . SOME CALLED THE MAG ELITIST (ME INCLUDED), AND TERMED THE GLOSSY PIX OF EXPENSIVE, FAR-FLUNG COURSES "GOLF PORN". WHILE ONLY THE TOP 2% OF INCOMES COULD AFFORD MOST OF WHAT WAS PROFILED ON THEIR PAGES, I'LL ADMIT THAT THEIR FORMAT WAS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THIS WEBSITE. AFTER ALL, ANY RECOMMENDATION ON A NEW COURSE, PARTICULARLY ONE WITH COOL PIX THAT HAVE YOU SALIVATING TO PLAY IT, ISN'T COMPLETE WITHOUT LISTING A GOOD BAR/RESTAURANT NEARBY, OR A PLACE TO CRASH. ALSO, THEIR WEBSITE IS NOW DEAD AND GONE, MAKING FAT GUY GOLF ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING PLACES ON THE NET WHERE YOU CAN STILL GET THEIR OLD ARTICLES. FAT GUY TO THE RESCUE ONCE AGAIN!
